  Greens question rail plans.

Thursday 30 January 2003
The Green Party have this week criticised the government’s strategic rail plan for not going far enough in encouraging green transport, and for not implementing immediately workable timescales. The party have also called for the renationalisation of the UK’s rail network and an abandonment of excessive road building.

Green Party transport spokesperson, Alan Francis commented; "Plans fall far short of calls by the Green party to boost Green Transport. The only way to ensure that the rail network is properly maintained and improved is to take it back into public ownership. If plans for the national road building plan were to be scrapped £35 billion could be liberated over a period of 10 years. This would insure adequate funding and mean that the Labour government would not have to postpone most plans until the end of the decade when they probably won't be in power anyway".
