Paint fumes targeted under new law

Wednesday 02 November 2005
paint brushNew regulations covering the chemical fumes from paints and varnishes have come into force this week, with the introduction of the Paints Directive. The legislation, which deals with solvent levels, will help to limit paint emissions impact on indoor environments, human health and the overall environment.

The paint industry has seen significant progress on a voluntary basis by manufacturers over recent years, but the new directive will ensure a consistent standard across the board.

Limits on the solvents used in paints have been set from January 2007, with tougher limits being enforced from January 2010. The measures being brought in will help to achieve an estimated 280 [IRO1]kilotonne reduction in volatile organic compounds by 2010 across Europe 59% of the current estimated emissions from painting sources.
